Akershus Fortress:
Construction
on this historic structure began in 1299 and continued in phases
in following centuries. The fortress situated off the shores of
the North Sea was built for the purpose of protecting the City
from invasion.
Akershus is now used mainly by the Norwegian
Military though it is open to the public and houses a number
of museums
such as;
The Norwegian Armed Forces Museum: this
museum has an interesting collection and is dedicated to the
military history of Norway since the Viking era up to the 2nd
World War.
The (Prison) Resistance Museum: Akershus
was used by German forces during the 2nd World War and was
the scene for a number of executions. The museum is dedicated
to the German occupation of Norway.
You can also pay a visit to the Akershus Castle
situate in the middle of the fortress. This grand building
was used as a wartime residence by Norwegian Royal families.
