Arc De Triomphe:
Situated
in the middle of the Place de l’Etoile (a major roundabout
in the Paris City Centre), the Arc de Triomphe is another popular
landmark in Paris. This is one of the largest triumphal arches
in the world. The construction of the arch was sanctioned by Napoleon
Bonaparte in 1806 after military triumph at Austerlitz. The Arch
houses a small museum that provides a history of its construction.
At the top of the arch are the names of key victories by Napoleon’s
armies.
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier:
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was placed underneath
the arch in 1920. The tomb has an eternal flame and both signify
the lives lost during the 1st and 2nd World Wars. On Armistice
Day celebrated on the 11th of November each year, the French
President places a wreath at the tomb. Armistice Day is remembered
as the day in which the 1st World War officially ended on the
11th of November 1918.
