Brugge
is another major Belgian City home to an estimated 117,000 people.
It is the administrative Capital of the West Flanders Province
which is located to the west of the Country bordered by France.
The City’s well preserved historic centre was in 2000 awarded
the Status of a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Brugge is a leading
tourist destination in Belgium attracting millions of visitors
each year.
Brugge was established in the 9th Century as
a small Viking settlement and by the 12th Century had developed
into a thriving trade City. The City has a large number of
tourist attractions such as its ancient buildings, impressive
architecture and museums.
Interesting places to visit include: the Diamond
House, a number of museums, historic monuments and foot excursions
into the old town. The City is also entertaining with a variety
of restaurants, pubs, cinemas, theatre houses, recreation parks
and shopping precincts.
Festivals in Brugge:
The City hosts a number of cultural and religious
events each year including music and film festivals which draw
a large number of visitors to Brugge.
The Cactus Music Festival: this
annual festival features live performances by local and international
artistes from different genres. The festival takes place at
the Minnewaterpark and is held usually in early July.
Procession of the Holy Blood: this
is a yearly procession where the holy blood on a cloth used
to wipe Jesus Christ is paraded through the town. This festival
is held usually during the month of May.
