Crete:
Made
famous through history and a number of Greek mythologies, Crete
is the largest of the Greek Islands covering an area of 8,336 square
km. The island is situated on the Sea of Crete and is home to an
estimated population of 620,000. Inland, the island has a very
uneven terrain featuring mountain ranges. The Island is divided
into the four prefectures of Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion and Lassithi.
Heraklion: the Capital of the Heraklion Prefecture and Crete,
the City is the largest urban centre on the island and is home
to one of the earliest civilizations on the continent; the Minoan
Civilization which is believed to have been existence more than
two millennia ago. The City is home to a number of museums, historic
sites and buildings. For entertainment, there are a number of
restaurants, pubs and nightclubs here.
Beaches in Crete:
Apart from its historic sites, Crete also has a vast number
of good beaches and resorts. There are also a number of small
more secluded beaches which provide a good getaway from the usually
crowded environment. Popular beaches are; Agia Galini, Chiona,
Maridati, Diasari, Xerokampos, Erimoupoli, Matala, Kouremenos
and Sitia. You can also engage in a variety of water sports like
water skiing, surfing and sailing.
