Edinburgh Castle:
An
icon of Scottish history and one of the United Kingdom’s
biggest tourist attractions, the Edinburgh Castle is a monumental
complex situated at the heart of the City. The Castle is located
at Castle Rock and overlooks the City.
The Castle was built in
a number of phases beginning from the late 11th Century. Fortifications
including walls and guns were later added as the Castle became
integral in the defense of Edinburgh. The Castle was home to
the Scottish Army from the 17th century until 1923. The Castle
is now
managed by a special government agency known as Historic Scotland.
The Castle is now open to the public and is accessible all year
round except during the Christmas and New Years festive season.
Opening hours are usually between 9.30 am and 5 pm. Important
attractions at the palace include; the Courtyard, St
Margaret’s
Chapel (the oldest surviving building in the castle) and the
Great Hall.
