Finland
obtained its independence from the Grand Duchy of Russia in 1917.
The Country was involved in both World Wars fighting against Russian
and German Invasion. Finland is a member of the European Union
and the only Scandinavian country to adopt the Euro as its currency.
The Country is situated in north Europe off the Baltic Sea
sandwiched between Sweden to its west and Russia to the
east, south of Norway.
Finland has a population of about 5.2 million people mainly
of Finnish origin. Finnish and Swedish are the Country’s national
languages. Finland is a democratic republic with Helsinki as
its capital city. The Country is divided into the six provinces
of;
Aland, Etela-Suomen, Ita-Suomen, Lansi-Suomen, Lappi and Oulun.
The Country has a thriving free-market economy with major industries
being; electronics, technology, ship building and food processing.
Helsinki:
Helsinki is the capital and largest city in Finland. The City
has a population if about 550,000 and is the main tourism domain
in the Country. Helsinki first gained international recognition
in the 20th Century when it hosted the Olympic Games in 1952
and the Olympic complex is one of the city’s feature
attractions.
Other major cities in the Country are; Tampere, Turku, Oulu,
Jyvaskyla and Rovaniemi.
