Garmisch-Partenkirchen
was originally two separate towns that were conjoined specifically
for hosting the 1936 Winter Olympics. The town and its surrounds
are a popular holiday destination for adventure tourism and its
recreation facilities.
Winter Sports:
During the months of winter the town is flocked by winter sport
enthusiasts visiting nearby Alpine Ski resorts. The ski areas
are popular for cross country skiing, snowboarding and hiking.
The town also hosts a number of professional ski events during
this time.
Summer Sports and Activities:
During summer the area becomes a haven for outdoor sport and
leisure. Popular activities include bike riding, mountain climbing,
rafting, fishing, paragliding and golf.
Other attractions:
The two towns have been in existence for over 11 centuries.
Historical buildings and sites to visit include; the Hunting
Lodge used as a retreat by King Ludwig II, the ruins of the Werdenfels
Castle built in the 13th Century, Ludwigstrasse a historic road
and the Olympic Ice Rink.
Getting there:
The Munich Airport is about 120 km from Garmisch-Partenkirchen
and flying to this airport then driving to the town is the common
transport option. You can also get to Garmisch-Partenkirchen
via neighboring Austria landing at the Innsbruck International
Airport which is about 58 km from the towns.
