An
important symbol of the festive season in Germany for centuries,
the welcoming Christmas Markets have developed in recent years
to become a major tourist attraction. Christmas markets are present
in most towns and cities around the Country. The markets usually
begin operating a few weeks prior to Christmas and some remain
open until new years. Local tourism offices provide information
on markets in towns around the Country. Popular Christmas markets
can be found in Bonn, Dusseldorf, Stuttgart, Cologne, Freiburg,
Frankfurt, Munich and Dresden.
Shopping:
The Christmas markets offer the opportunity to purchase genuine
handcrafted items including; Christmas decorations, collectibles,
toys and clothing. There are usually food stalls within the markets
selling hot freshly baked bread and biscuits, sweets and chocolate.
Hamburg Christmas Market:
The Hamburg City hall and square are during the last week of
November converted into a buzzing market with a number of stalls
selling Christmas decorations and craft items. The market will
during the festive season stay open till 9pm daily and officially
closes on the 23rd of December.
Nuremburg Christmas Market:
The Christmas market in Nuremburg is held at the City’s
old town area. The market is popular for its Christmas figurines
and collectibles and traditional foods.
Munich Christmas Market: the Christmas market in Munich is held
at Marienplatz and the market is open until Christmas Eve.
