The
administrative Capital of the Province of East Flanders, Ghent
is another historic Belgium City, home to an estimated 224,800
people. It is the second largest City in the Flanders region after
the City of Antwerp. The area where the City is presently located
is believed to have been settled in as early as the Stone Age as
evidenced by archaeological findings. The City’s rich history
is on display at some of its buildings which showcase medieval
age architecture such as; the Gravensteen Castle and the St Bavo’s
Cathedral,
Economy:
Ghent is an important trade and financial city in the province.
Its port is one of the busiest in the Country handling over 20
million tones of cargo on average each year.
Education:
Ghent is also a major educational City in the Flanders region,
being home to a number of Universities and research institutes
such as the Ghent University which was established in 1817 by
order of King William I of Netherlands.
Tourism and travel:
Ghent is also a vibrant and social city home to a number of
museums, theatres, shopping centers, a wide selection of restaurants,
pubs and nightclubs. The City is also home to one of the Country’s
leading soccer teams FC Ghent.
