Greece:
The
Hellenic Republic of Greece is a southern European Nation famed
for its mythical stories, Gods and being one of the earliest European
Civilizations. Modern Greece attained its independence from the
Ottoman Empire in 1829 and is a member of the European Union and
NATO. The Country has adopted the Euro as its official currency.
The Country consists of the mainland which extends into the Ionian,
Mediterranean and Aegean Seas; and a number of Islands and isles
with the main ones being; Mykonos, Santorini, Rhodes, Crete, Corfu,
Paros, Los, Kos, Kefallonia, Zakynthos and Hydra. The Country has
an estimated population of 10.7 million. Greek is the national
language, though English is also spoken by parts of the population.
Government:
Greece has a fledgling democracy which has been in existence
since 1974 when a referendum rejected the return of the Monarchy.
Prior to this, the Country had been ruled by a military dictatorship
since 1967. Presidential elections are held every five years
with the last one held in 2005. The Country is divided into 51
prefectures and the autonomous region of Agion Oros.
Athens:
Athens is the Capital of Greece and has for centuries been the
Centre of power and civilization since ancient Greece. The City
is famed for its history and is the main tourist attraction for
visitors to the Country. Athens is distinguished as being the
city where the Olympics were born. The City hosted the first
modern day Olympics in 1896 and most recently in 2004.
