The
Republic of Iceland is an island nation situated in northern Europe
in the North Atlantic Ocean. The Country has done well in terms
of reconstruction and economic development over the past century
since the devastation caused by the Askja Volcano in 1875. The
Country was settled between the 9th and 10th Centuries A.D by Celtic
and Norwegian immigrants. Prior to this there is no evidence to
suggest that Iceland was inhabited. The Country attained its independence
from Denmark in 1944. Sparsely populated, the Country has only
about 300,000.
Reykjavik:
Reykjavik is the Capital and the largest city of Iceland. The
City is the main cultural, entertainment, political and commerce
centre of the Country. Reykjavik has the largest population
concentration with about 112,490 people living in the City which
is about one
third of Iceland’s population.
Keflavik:
Keflavik is the second largest urban centre in Iceland. The
City has a population of about 10,000 people and is located on
the southwestern tip of the island. The town is important being
home to the Keflavik International Airport which is the busiest
airport in the Country.
Money: Iceland is not a member of the European Union mainly
due to political and economic concerns. The Country’s
currency is known as the Icelandic Kroner.
