former Soviet State, Latvia became independent in 1991 following
the disintegration of the Union. Latvia is a tiny nation situated
in Eastern Europe off the Baltic Sea to the west of Russia. The
Country has a population of about 2.27 million people.
Latvian
is the national language and Russian is also widely spoken.
The Country is a member of the European Union and the Latvian
Lat (LVL)
is the title of its currency. Major industries in Latvia include;
white goods, food processing, automobiles, electronics and
fertilizers.
Riga:
Riga is the Capital and largest city of Latvia and is situated
off the Gulf of Riga near the centre of the Country. The historic
center of Riga is the main tourist attraction for visitors to
the City. The City has a number of good hotels such as; the Hotel
Grand Palace Riga, the Radisson SAS Daugava Hotel, Hotel de Rome,
Metropole Hotel and the Centra Hotel.
The Riga International Airport is the main airport in the city
and the busiest in Latvia. The airport is a major hub for local
airline Air Baltic. The airline conducts regular flights to a
number of major European destinations.
