Luxembourg
was established in 963 though it became a Grand Duchy in 1815.
This tiny landlocked Country is sandwiched between Germany to its
east and Belgium to its west. France borders Luxembourg to the
south. The Country was one of the founders of the European Union
and is also a member of NATO. Luxembourg’s population stands
at a mere 468,571 people.
Government and administration:
Luxembourg has a Constitutional Monarchy type of government
headed by a Grand Duke who is head of State. The head of government
is a Prime Minister with legislative elections held every five
years. Grand Duke Henri is the current head of state and Jean
Claude Juncker is the Prime Minister. The Country is divided
into the three administrative districts of Diekirch, Luxembourg
and Grevenmacher with Luxembourg City as the Capital.
Economy:
Luxembourg enjoys a healthy and stable economy with the main
industries being; steel, metal works, chemicals, telecommunications
and information technology. The tourism and banking industries
have in recent years experienced steady growth. The Euro is
Luxembourg’s
official currency.
Language and Religion:
Luxembourgish is the Country’s national language though
French and German which are widely spoken are used as official
languages. The Roman Catholic religion practiced by a majority
of the Country’s population.
