Portugal
is a southwest European Nation off the North Atlantic Ocean.
Its bordered to its north and east by Spain. Lisbon is the
Capital
and the largest city of the Country. In history, Portugal was
a major world power. The Country had considerable military
and naval
capabilities and had colonies in South America and Africa.
Portugal
also produced some of the world’s most famous explorers
in history such as; Henry the Navigator, Vasco da Gama and Pedro
Alvares
Cabral. The Country is a member of NATO and the European Union.
The Euro is the official currency of Portugal. The Country has
a healthy economy which is still behind those of major nations
on the Continent. Prominent industries include; ship building,
metal works, petroleum refining, electronics, textiles and rubber.
Lisbon:
With a population of just about 0.6 million people, Lisbon is
the Capital and largest City of Portugal. The City was largely
rebuilt after an earthquake that caused widespread devastation
and damage in 1755.
The City became the Capital of the Portuguese
Empire in 1255 though it had been in existence as a trade centre
for centuries prior to this. The City is the financial and
commerce capital of Portugal; home to a number of industries
and the headquarters
for major local and international firms.
