Romania:
A
former communist state, Romania has managed to overcome almost
a century of political and armed conflict. The Country was involved
in both world wars which led to its temporary occupation by the
Soviet Union.
The Country had a tumultuous transition to democracy
in the late 1980s culminating in the ousting and execution
of longtime dictator Nicolae Ceausescu. Compared to other European
nations,
Romania is still struggling to steer its economy in the right
direction. Major local industries include; automobiles, machinery,
crude oil
refining, food processing and textiles. The title of the Country’s
currency is the Romanian Leu (RON).
People and Culture: Romania has an estimated population of 22.3
million people mostly of Romanian ethnicity. Romanian is the
Country’s national language though Hungarian and German
are widely spoken.
Bucharest:
Bucharest is the Capital City of Romania, a status it has held
since the 1860s. The City is also the most populous in the
Country and Europe home to about 2 million residents. Bucharest
is home
to a good number of the Country’s industries such as
food processing, engineering, farm machinery and textiles.
The City
is also the headquarters for a number of national firms and
is the main center for commerce.
