Shannon International
Airport:
Another
of Ireland’s international airport’s the Shannon
International airport caters mainly for passenger flights to
and from major North
American destinations and a number of European Cities. The airport
is the 3rd busiest after Cork and Dublin. The airport is run
by the Dublin Airport Authority which also operates a number
of airports
around the Country.
Local airline Ryanair is the main operator
from this airport providing scheduled flights to a number of
European destinations including; Frankfurt, Glasgow, London,
Manchester,
Milan, Paris and Rome. Other airlines operating from Shannon
are Aer Lingus, Air Canada, Belavia, American Airlines, Delta
Air Lines,
EasyJet and US Airways. The main transatlantic destinations
are; Atlanta, New York, Philadelphia, Boston and Toronto.
The airport began operating in the 1940s, replacing a flying
boat terminal at Foynes with the advent of modern aviation technology.
Services at Shannon include; cafes, restaurants, pubs, postal
services, duty free shopping, visitor information and internet
access. There are regular bus services from the airport into
nearby Limerick and Galway. A taxi rank is situated outside the
arrival hall.
